Welcome to the project!
I am analyzing data obtained through a survey of 300+ farmers in Alberta. The farmers were asked 40+ questions about the type of farming activities that they do, which environmental issues they find important, and the greenhouse gas reduction practices or projects that they may choose to adopt. Crop (grains, pulses, canola, flax, etc.) and beef cattle farmers with farms sales over $10,000 per year were included in the study. By analyzing their responses, we can find out which greenhouse gas reduction practices are most appealing, which have already been adopted, and to which there is resistance. Furthermore, we can find out what types of farms are more likely to be willing to adopt more practices, and whether certain practices correlate with specific values. When we answer these questions, we can get one step closer to knowing which greenhouse gas reduction practices to promote in policy at this time, which values should be highlighted during promotion, and which types of farms the policies should be aimed at.
OUR FINDINGS
Promoting Greenhouse Gas Reduction Practices
Top Value
The goal that was rated most important by 53% of respondents was soil quality.
|
Crop Winner
Leaving/spreading crop residue in fields after harvest is the most popular crop practice.
|
Beef Winners
For beef practices, manure composting, making animal breeding decisions to improve feed efficiency, and introducing legumes or other nitrogen fixers into grazing lands are all popular.
|
Popular Projects
LED lights, solar panels, and making farm buildings more energy efficient are the most popular projects.
